Manchester United fans are a forgiving bunch. After a summer spent on the beach, flirting with Spaniards, want-away winger Cristiano Ronaldo received a rapturous round of applause before coming on against Villarreal midweek. Old Trafford reeked of indignity.
Ronaldo has long been looking to jump into bed with potential suitors Real Madrid. But, on Wednesday night, months of pining for a move and lamenting contractual obligations were forgotten by the 76,000 fans in attendance. He was welcomed back into United’s bed with open arms and woken up to breakfast in bed the next morning.
With customary magnanimity, Ronaldo foresaw his welcome return. ““I’m already in the history of the club. When I play the fans will love me again,” mused the Portuguese. His prophecy was correct.
